Commission recommendations become law

Recommendations made by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE) for new boundaries in four local authorities became law this week and are published today (7 January 2011).

New electoral divisions for: Cornwall, Northumberland, Cheshire East and Cheshire West & Chester Councils have now successfully completed a 40 day period of parliamentary scrutiny and will now be implemented at the local elections on 5 May 2011.

On Monday 11 October 2010, the LGCBE laid four draft orders in both Houses of Parliament to seek to implement the new boundaries for electoral divisions in the four areas. After completing the parliamentary process without successful challenge late last year, the draft orders were ‘made’ and registered on 4 January 2011 and are published today on the government’s legislation website.

The electoral reviews for the four areas, which were completed by the LGBCE in 2010, followed the creation of unitary authorities covering each of the three counties in 2009. This is the first time recommendations made by the LGBCE have been scrutinised in this way

The orders, which allow for the implementation of the new electoral arrangements, can be viewed through the following links:
